Short answer
Hire an individual social media manager when you already have a clear plan and enough content to work from. Work with an agency when you need the strategy, the production and the publishing handled together. Use an employee only if you can give them real direction and enough hours to do the job properly.
Many businesses begin by giving social media to someone already on the team. That can work when the person has clear direction and enough time, but it becomes difficult when marketing competes with their main role.
The in-house employee
Works when marketing is genuinely part of someone's job description rather than an extra tacked onto reception or sales. The catch is not talent, it is time and direction. Content is the first thing to slide when the phone rings, and one person rarely covers strategy, filming, editing, writing and reporting at a professional standard.
The freelance social media manager
Often excellent value if you know what you want made and can supply raw material. You are buying execution. When it goes sideways it is usually for one of two reasons: there was no strategy for them to execute, or they were also expected to produce all the content, on their own, for a fee that did not cover it.
The agency
An agency brings several skills together: strategy, production, writing, publishing and reporting. It usually costs more than a freelancer, but gives the business broader capacity and a defined process. It may not be the right choice if you only need one narrow task completed.
A quick way to decide
- You have a plan and content, and just need it posted: freelancer.
- You have plenty happening but nothing gets captured: agency, for the production capacity.
- You are not sure what your marketing should be saying at all: agency, for the strategy first.
- Marketing is a full-time function with several channels and a real budget: consider an in-house hire, with outside production support.
There’s also a useful middle option. An internal team member can handle day-to-day publishing while an outside team leads strategy and content production. A clear division of responsibilities matters more than choosing one model exclusively.
